From Touch to Talk
In the 1970s, computers belonged to those who could recite the incantations (commands). The 80s and 90s brought GUIs — mice and icons made them something "anyone could use." The 2000s handed us smartphones; one finger was enough. And now, with LLMs, we're moving from touch to talk. It's less a new input method than a rewriting of the relationship itself.
Traditional UI meant designers guessed in advance what users would want, then froze those guesses into buttons and menus. Learning the system's language was the user's job. Where's "Save"? What's the difference between "Export" and "Download"?
LLMs flip this around. Humans express intent in everyday words, and the machine does the interpreting. A world where "summarize last week's meeting notes and send them to Slack" just works is no longer science fiction. When the premise of "expressing intent through UI" collapses, what exactly are designers supposed to design?
Ambiguity and Transparency
The strength of LLMs is that they can catch ambiguous input — and that's also their biggest UX problem. When the AI's "interpretation" drifts away from your "intent," will you even notice? In the button era, we always knew what we had just done. Accept the looseness of natural language, and you lose some visibility into what's happening. Designing that transparency back in is, I believe, the heart of UX in the LLM era.
The principles that have grown on me while building products are surprisingly plain. Don't hide the AI's thinking-in-progress. Don't try to nail it in one shot — slip in a natural "is this what you meant?" Leave a path for noticing and fixing mistakes. And be honest about what it can't do, because over-promising is what actually breaks trust.
The shape of interaction has changed. But the things that make something feel "easy to use," namely feedback, a sense of control, and trust, haven't budged. Staying honest with that is the work of UX design in the AI era.
