I'm an AI engineer with both feet planted in UX design as well. Moving between the two views, something interesting happens: what looks like "the only way to implement it" to the engineer looks like "users will never get that" to the designer. That boundary is where the difficulty of LLM products lives, and, honestly, the fun too.

Model Limits ≠ Experience Limits

Context limits, hallucinations, inconsistency — LLM limitations and I see each other daily. But letting technical limits become experience limits is, I think, a design defeat. When the model isn't confident, it doesn't have to go silent; it can simply lead with "I'm not entirely sure, but..." Wrapping technical limits in UX — that's where I stand.

The Expectation Problem

Users tend to expect an almighty AI. I get it — I did too, at first. The more dazzling the demo, the harder the fall when the real product can't deliver. So show what it can't do, early. Before the user ever hits a failure, plant a UI that confesses "this may be outside my expertise" — closing the gap between expectation and reality in advance.

Designing the In-Between, and the Mistakes

Button UIs had clean cause and effect: press, and it depresses; finish, and "Done" appears. LLMs aren't like that. While text streams out, you can't see what's going on. So show the thinking. A single "looking up ○○..." makes the black box just a little more transparent. Far more reassuring than a spinner going round and round.

And LLM mistakes don't shout like a 404. They stroll in wearing a perfectly plausible face. All the more reason to make "that's wrong" easy to say, with feedback buttons, edit modes, and regeneration placed where they feel natural. Treating AI mistakes as everyday rather than shameful is what grows long-term trust. And when the user fixes things with you, that's not failure — that's collaboration.

The perfect LLM doesn't exist. But you can still build a good experience with an imperfect one. Bridging that gap is the job of UX design.
