Fire and the Invention of "Gathering"

About 1.4 million years ago, humans got hold of fire. It wasn't just about warmth and light. Gathering around a fire created, for the first time, a "place." Nights grew longer, language grew richer inside that safe circle, and knowledge began outliving individuals. It was the moment information escaped the individual brain and became collective memory.

Writing, Print, the Internet

Around 5,000 years ago, writing externalized memory onto clay tablets. Writer and reader no longer had to share the same moment — humanity's first asynchronous communication. The ancestors of Slack and email are Mesopotamian transaction records. Whenever the form of interaction changes, there's always a question underneath: where does memory live?

Gutenberg's press democratized knowledge — with side effects. Dialects were flattened into "correct" written language, and unrecorded knowledge quietly vanished. Every new medium reaches further and, without fail, drops something along the way.

The internet erased distance. Then came a brand-new chore: choosing. There was never a problem of choice when information itself was scarce; now we live inside far more of it than our minds can hold. Algorithms arrived as the answer — and brought filter bubbles along as the next problem. Solutions breeding the next distortion: the usual pattern of media revolutions.

AI Changes the Layer of Interpretation

AI works at a different layer from every revolution before it. Not transmission, not recording, not access — it changes interpretation. For the first time, the medium is trying to understand us. And the skill being tested shifts from "mastering the tool" to "conveying intent to the tool." The very definition of literacy is up for review.

From nights around the fire to nights talking with AI — new media always shows up demanding a new literacy.

The question I keep asking as someone who studies human cognition: what does this interaction expand in us, and what does it sacrifice? Now that AI holds the layer of interpretation, that question cuts a little sharper than before.
